Abstract

Snakehead fish (Channa striata) extract contains peptide compounds with antibacterial properties, making it a potential active ingredient for the development of hydrogel-based wound dressings. Hydrogel-based dressings are water-based wound dressings composed primarily of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), a hydrophilic polymer modified to absorb large amounts of water, along with additives such as polyethylene oxide or propylene glycol, which help maintain a moist wound environment. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of hydrogel-based dressings containing snakehead fish (Channa striata) extract against the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. The study employed an experimental method using the agar well diffusion technique. The results showed that against Staphylococcus aureus, hydrogel formulations containing 5%, 10%, and 15% extract produced inhibition zones of 2,96 mm, 4,76 mm, and 6,57 mm, respectively. Against Staphylococcus epidermidis, the inhibition zones were 2,95 mm, 4,87 mm, and 7,39 mm for the 5%, 10%, and 15% extract concentrations, respectively. It can be concluded that hydrogel-based dressings containing snakehead fish (Channa striata) extract exhibit antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis.
