Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of Gnetum gnemon L. leaf extract gel against Staphylococcus aureus. The leaf extract was obtained through the maceration method using 96% ethanol as the extraction solvent. Gel formulations containing G. gnemon leaf extract at concentrations of 5%, 7%, and 9% were subsequently prepared and evaluated for their antibacterial activity. The antibacterial assay was performed using the disc diffusion method on Nutrient Agar (NA) inoculated with S. aureus. Chloramphenicol was used as the positive control, while the gel base served as the negative control. The results demonstrated that all gel formulations containing G. gnemon leaf extract exhibited inhibitory activity against the growth of S. aureus. Among the tested formulations, the 9% extract gel showed the highest antibacterial activity, producing a mean inhibition zone diameter of 16.5 mm, which was classified as a strong inhibitory effect. These findings indicate that G. gnemon leaf extract gel, particularly at a concentration of 9%, has promising potential as a topical antibacterial agent against Staphylococcus aureus.
